1. WHAT IS A WIND TUNNEL?
A wind tunnel is a free fall simulator that generates a continuous flow of air at free fall speed - copying free fall conditions.
2. HOW DOES FLYING WITHOUT A PLANE AND PARACHUTE WORK?
Hurricane Factory is an adrenaline attraction with a recirculating vertical wind tunnel. Four large fans provide a laminar flow of air identical to free fall speed – just like a real jump from a plane.
3. HOW HIGH CAN I FLY IN THE WIND TUNNEL?
Hurricane Factory - Free Fall Simulator - is 4.3 m wide and 14 m high. After getting some skills, you can fly up to 14 m high.
4. HOW CAN I INFLUENCE MY FLIGHT HEIGHT?
Our instructors will show you the basic moves to control your flight. You will find out how to control your flight height by changing your body position.
5. WHAT SHOULD I BRING?
You’ll need lace-up shoes (ideally trainers), comfortable clothes to wear under the flight suit, and especially a good mood! Swimwear is not recommended.
6. DOES HURRICANE FACTORY’S AIR FLOW HAVE CONSTANT SPEED?
Air speed depends on the weight and the flying position of the flyer. The operator controls wind speed depending on the flyer. Wind speed is lower for lighter flyers and higher for heavier flyers.
7. HOW HIGH IS WIND SPEED IN THE FREE FALL SIMULATOR?
The average wind speed in the simulator is about 180km/h. Professional flyers train at up to 270km/h.
8. HOW DO I ENTER THE AIR FLOW?
Flyers enter air flow through an entrance in the lower flight chamber part by leaning forward into the air flow. Our instructor will help you enter. You’ll feel the air flow lifting your legs, and you’ll be flying in the basic position. When you’re used to the air flow, you can fly in all three dimensions.
9. WILL I BE BY MYSELF IN THE FLIGHT CHAMBER?
An experienced instructor will be in the flight chamber with you throughout your flight. They can always help you and stop the air flow if necessary. They will also help you find the correct body position to enable stable flight.
10. DO I NEED ANY SPECIAL SKILLS OR QUALIFICATION?
The Hurricane Factory free fall simulator is designed for beginners. Simulator flying is appropriate for all ages. Anyone can experience free fall - without the risks of parachuting. The flyer should have good health, without serious health problems. Each flyer will receive detailed instructions and ground training from our qualified instructors before the flight.
11. DO I NEED ANY SPECIAL EQUIPMENT?
We provide complete skydiving equipment. Flight suits are solid fabric. Equipment also includes helmet and glasses. The flight chamber is air-conditioned with temperature independent of ambient air temperature. So no special clothing is required under the flight suit. Wear any clothes in which you can freely move.
12. CAN MORE THAN ONE PERSON FLY IN THE SIMULATOR AT ONE TIME?
Up to six experienced flyers can simultaneously use the simulator. Beginners fly with their instructors. When flyers can control their air stream movements, they can fly with other participants.
13. CAN THE FLIGHT BE STOPPED?
Sure - anytime! Your instructor can signal the operator to stop the flight or decrease speed.
14. HOW LONG CAN I FLY IN THE SIMULATOR?
Flying in the simulator requires a lot of physical effort - just like real skydiving. The whole body is working - so muscles tire. Two minutes of flying are an unforgettable experience. We recommend starting with 3-6 minutes, which corresponds to five to ten jumps from 4,000m. Every skydiving move can be learned. Beginners shouldn’t fly more than 20 minutes per day. Professional flyers often fly more than one hour a day. For professional skydivers, one hour of flight in the free fall simulator corresponds to approximately 100 jumps from 4,000m.
15. HOW LONG DO INDIVIDUAL ENTRIES TAKE?
Flight time in the Superfly simulator is usually divided into 1.5-minute entries. You can also fly several 1.5-minute entries at a time upon request. The duration of each entry is optional - mostly depending on the flyer’s physical condition and training.
16. CAN I WEAR JEWELLERY OR A WATCH IN THE SUPERFLY TUNNEL?
No bling allowed! Jewellery might come off due to high airflow speeds and hurt the flyer or damage the tunnel technology. So before flying, remove any lose items, empty all your pockets, and take off any bracelets, watches, earrings, and chains.
17. WILL MY FLIGHT BE FILMED?
Yes – you don’t need your own camcorder or camera operator. Hurricane Factory technology includes a video system. Each entry is recorded and stored for seven days. We can copy the video to a DVD or USB key that you can buy from the reception.
18. CAN I BREATHE EASILY IN SUCH A STRONG AIR STREAM?
People don’t usually have problems to breathe in the strong air stream. However, there are exceptions. If the air stream causes you any breathing problems, we’ll give you a full-face helmet.
19. CAN I TAKE A CAMERA OR CAMCORDER INTO THE SIMULATOR?
Yes, but not into the flight chamber. Your companion can take photos through the flight chamber’s glass.
20. WHAT IF MY SHOE/WATCH/RING/CAR KEYS, ETC. FLY OFF IN THE SIMULATOR?
Such items may get damaged or completely destroyed. In the worst scenario, a lose item might continue in the air stream and hit you at a high speed when it re-enters the flight chamber. So your flight would have to be stopped immediately. The fan itself may even get damaged. The simulator will then automatically stop for safety reasons, your flight will end, and the wind tunnel will be cleaned of foreign objects. The simulator facility is very expensive, so please do not take any foreign objects into the flight chamber except for the flight suit, helmet, and glasses.
21. CAN I BUY A HURRICANE FACTORY GIFT VOUCHER?
Yes, gift vouchers can be bought on our eShop or at reception.
22. CAN I ACQUIRE FREE FALL EXPERIENCE IN THE SIMULATOR?
Hurricane Factory produces the same conditions as in free fall. Body positions and movements are exactly the same as in free fall. As special preparation for AFF (accelerated freefall), you can train stable body positions, starting and stopping rotation, altimeter reading, and a stable position when deploying a parachute. This reduces stress during real free fall and AFF training. Less stress means more capacity for other tasks, and increases enjoyment of the jump for you and your instructor.
23. IS THE SIMULATOR FAST ENOUGH?
Simulator speeds reach up to 270 km/h - plenty for all FREEFLY and FREESTYLE positions.
24. CAN I FLY WITH MY OWN FLIGHT SUIT AND HELMET?
Yes, professionals can use their own equipment. But you can’t fly with own camcorder or camera.
25. WHAT IF I LOSE CONTROL?
Professional flyers are also accompanied in the simulator. Experienced instructors are always in the flight chamber and are trained to quickly help you.
26. IS ONE HOUR ENOUGH TO MASTER FLYING IN A SITTING POSITION?
That depends on your previous experience and physical condition. When you can fly independently in a controlled, steady position on your abdomen, you will start learning to fly on your back, and then transitions between these two positions. Then you can start learning to fly in a sitting position. You’ll soon realise that you need an experienced instructor on hand.
27. DO I HAVE TO WEAR A HELMET AND GLOVES?
You must wear a helmet in the tunnel for safety reasons. Gloves are not compulsory but are recommended to prevent any skin abrasions. You could scratch yourself on the flight chamber walls.
28. CAN I WEAR DARK GLASSES? IS THE LIGHT IN THE SIMULATOR BRIGHT ENOUGH, OR DO I NEED CLEAR GLASSES?
Flyers should wear clear glasses both during basic and advanced courses. Communication between the instructor and flyer is through eye contact. This enables the instructor to more easily recognise the flyer’s state of mind and respond.
29. CAN ARM, SHOULDER, LEG AND BACK EXERCISES PREPARE ME FOR FLYING IN THE SIMULATOR?
Flying in the simulator can be quite tiring for non-trained flyers. Flying requires muscles not used in other sports. So strengthening your shoulders, arms, and legs is always a plus. The key aspect for successful flying is mobility and the ability to coordinate movements.
